Bangkok part II

11.April 2013 - Thailand islands

Sawasdee pee mai!

Here it is everybody; the last post from Asia, Bangkok. Our trip must be coming to an end, because our camera decided to quit on us. We are very thankful though for the time it spent with us loyally, even after Charlotte dropped it last October while being startled by a cute little wallaby. This also means that sadly we will not be able to share any pictures with you from Bangkok or Abu Dhabi.

As already planned on our last trip to Bangkok, we were going to visit the Royal Palace and WatPhraKaew. Franjo decided however that he had seen enough temples, so Charlotte went on expedition by herself. The temples were as many others in Asia beautifully maintained, but not much prettier, so not such a big miss for Franjo.

In order to end our trip well we decided to go to a local market (Chatuchak) to buy some last souvenirs. We have never seen such a big market. We could have spent days there, just looking around. You can buy modern art, local craft, furniture, clothes of all kind, pets and anything they need, food, toys, the list is endless. We found some nice typical things to bring home, such as a Dragon and a Buddha head. Anyone who should be in the area, and would like to buy some souvenirs, this market is definitely a big hit!

The highlight though of our second visit in Bangkok was the Songkran festival. Songkran is some kind of Thai New Year festival. Back in the days people would wet each other with some water in order to bring good fortune for the future. The tradition has evolved into a large water splash festival in the streets of all major cities in Thailand, such as in Bangkok. So from the 13th of April there was no way to walk around the streets without getting soaked. In order to defend ourselves, we both bought a water gun. So for two days in a row we had some fun with the locals, getting absolutely soaking wet. Since we got very wet on both days, we believed to be ready to head back West with some good fortune for the fresh and new future that lies ahead of us!
