Dolphines, Lighthouse and a good surf!

12.December 2011 - Byron Bay

Hey there,

ariving in Byron Bay I knew I would enjoy this place much more than Surfers Paradise. A much smaller town, a nice beach close to the hostel, very interesting and diffrent people on the streets and no toothache!
The first day I spend mostly in the hostel because I still had to struggle a bit with the food poisoning and I wanted to be in a good shape for the next day since I was about to go on a Seakayak tour.
And it was definitly worth doing it - Dolphines very close to our kayaks and they even jumped out of the water and performed some tricks as if they wanted to impress us - amazing animals and fun to watch! The exercise was good as well and I had a really good time, eventhough we got a bit washed because it's quite hard to ride a wave with a kayak without falling over :D. The rest of the day I spend with going to the supermarket to get my groceries, walking through the little town and enjoying some very nice Nachos with Beef and Cheese!
On the third day in Byron I had to oranize my further travel and didn't do very much apart from this. In the evening I went up to the lighthouse to watch the sunset and passed the most easterly point of Australia on the way. Since the weather wasn't very good and it even started to rain when I was up the hill, I couldn't enjoy a nice sunset, but instead got rewarded with a double rainbow and spectacular views over the area around Byron and nice constallations of clouds. If you ever come to Byron - go up to the lighthouse!

The next day I went to the hostel desk and rented a surfboard for the next 24hours and therefore spend a lot of time in the water, catching some waves to make a break to eat something and jump in the water again :). In the evening there was a BBQ in the hostel which I joined and they even had a fireshow - pretty impressive and nice to watch!

As you can imagine, I went out to go surfing in the next morning and tried to catch some waves. Then I spend some time reading in my book and enjoying this nice little place, after the big city, Surfers Paradise. Since it was my last day in Byron I went out with some guys from the hostel I already knew from Airlie Beach. At first we enjoyed a nice steak for 6$ and then supported one of our mates in a competion, at which one could win a dive course for the open water. We did quite well and he won the 450$ worth dive course - nice! I enjoyed some more beer and went back to the hostel around 12am to get to bed.

Then I catched the greyhound and was about to go to Coffs Harbour - a six hour drive from Byron.

As conclusion I can say that I enjoyed Byron very much and I definitly can understand why a lot of Australians go there for their holidays.

I will try to provide you with some pictures instead of another article - I'm a bit tiered of writting :D.

See ya!
