Slavery ehhh work!

14.February 2012 - Sydney

Still there?

As you maybe already noticed below the Map on the left hand side there is a button "New Zealand". My journey to NZ is also the reason why you haven't heard something from me for so long - barely any internet access neither the time to write something.

But before I start with that I first want to finish me Sydney experience.

I'm not sure, but I think I already told you that I found a job after 2 days looking for one in an italian restaurant at Circular Quey named East Bank. Since I had limited time I was happy to find something so fast, eventhough the payment would be rather low, but still enough for my further travels.
My first working day was the 2nd of Janurary, just after NYE and in the middle of the summer holidays and since Circular Quey is the address for tourist to go (Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Ferry Terminal) the restaurant was full with people.
Not knowing what to expect, except that I will have a 2hours trail, I stepped into the kitchen and was briefly introduced to anyone and had to start working immidetely since it was very busy.
The other kitchenhand, who gave me a quick introduction, was also from germany, which was quite handy, since it was easier to understand him in the noisy kitchen.
After 2hours non-stop working under high pressure, sweated and not so happy anymore the kitchenchef handed me a clock in card and told me I was hired and should continue working. Feeling sorry for the other kitchenhand and kind of happy having a job, I accepted and finished at 2 o'clock or something...
The rest of the week was almost as stressful as the first day and I was thinking about looking for another job, but was on the one hand side to tiered and on the other hand side to lazy :D. So I continued and after the end of the summer holidays it got a bit more quite and especially the shifts under the week were quite relaxed and I could enjoy plenty of the delicious food they made :). The weekends though were still very busy and I often had to work 9-10hours without a break, but at least that would give me some more hours and therefore more money. Since I had to go to work not before 4pm I had plenty of time in the morning to sleep in and take my time to meet friends, do some shopping or whatever.

Still working in the kitchen was not really the best thing I could imagine, so I was quite happy to count the days until my last working day, which happend to be the 14th of February. To the male readers - that's valentines day... That's the day where you take your wives/girlfriends/orwhatdoIknow out for dinner. And what fits better than a italien restaurant... GREAT! Before I left my appartment I thought it would be an relaxed and chilled last working day, tuesday is normally not very busy... On the way to the restaurant I got reminded by the higher prices for the roses, the many people on the street, the men running around finding somethin appropriate and the cheesy advertisments everywhere.
Working from 4pm until 2:30am without any break, I was delighted to go home after that and knowing that I never will return to that kitchen, except for getting my payment and saying goodbye.

Nevertheless it was an experience and maybe I can organize my self a bit better after it and I know that I never will work in a kitchen again, but still feel sorry for the kitchenhands when I walk past other restaurants :D.

So far to my working experience in Australia, writing down the stories of my travels is definitly more fun :D.

have a good one!
