Fraser Island

25.November 2011 - Hervey Bay

G'day mates,

writing you from the rainy and cold Brisbane...that's not how it should be! :D

On the 25th and 26th of November I've been to Fraser Island.
But first I had to get to Hervey Bay, what took some time, since the Greyhound Bus I was driving with broke down. We had to wait for a mechanic for over an hour and had to wait in the middle of nowhere and as it was mid day it was burning hot... not very nice though, but alright. At least the hostel I was staying in Hervey Bay was really nice, had free breakfast, free internet, a little cinema and clean and comfortable rooms.

But back to Fraser - we arrived on the island around 10am - our Tourguide for the next two days was already waiting for us and we started our trip immediately. Very soon we reached the tracks that are connecting the diffrent parts of the island. Since it's the world largest sand island you can imagine that you need a 4wd car there. In fact the roads were very sandy and bumpy, nevertheless it was a nice ride and our Tourguide told us a lot of interesting facts about the island and how it was possible that a whole forest growed on a sand island.
Our first stop was at a little lake where we stopped for about half an hour before we headed to our lunch location. After that we went to Lake Mc Kinzey - one of the nicest lakes I've ever saw. The water is crystal clear, by night the lake is like a mirror. Would be awesome to go on the lake with a kanu by night...
At Lake Mc Kinzey we stayed a little longer and also saw the first Dingo, which are famous on Fraser Island. To keep it short - they are wild dogs and you shouldn't foul arround with them, but be aggressive if they come to close.
The last aim for the day was a little part of the forest which was burnt down - wild fires playing an important part in the life-circle of the island and whole australia. As before we were told a lot of interesting facts by our tour guide, who was living on the island vor more then 15 years and a photographer, who already helped teams from national geographic and everything to get good shots of alle the beautiful places on the island. So we were pretty lucky :D.

After a restful night in a nice hostel, we departet early in the morning to go to more interesting places, just like the 124km long beach and Indian Head, from where you could see Green turtles and Eagle Rays.
We did another stop at the Champaigne pools, where the waves are crushing against the rocks and generate little swimming pools behind the rocks.
As you pass a lot of little creeks when you drive along the beach, we stopped at the biggest, Eli Creek to go for a little swim. The water was flowing to the ocean and you could float from the top of the creek down to the ocean - very nice :).
Another stop was the Maheno shipwreck - really impressive to walk around and have a close look to what the tide and ocean is doing to big stuff lying at the beach when nobody cleans it up :D.
Not far from the Maheno was another wreck, but a little bit smaller. Around 3am in the night a couple drove along the beach and got stuck in the wet-sand with it's brand new Mercedes Benz. As soon as you are stucked there you can't get out, so they had to leave their car and the ocean took it - even the keys were still in the ignition when we passed it the day after. Must have been hard work to get it out of the sand and it was definitly a very expensive ride on Fraser Island for them.

Since we were a bit late on our way back, the tourguide speeded up a little bit and raced through the very small and tight sand-roads, passing big trees with just 10-20cm between them and the bus... that was a hell of a ride I can tell you, but great fun! :D

As the day before we were served a very nice dinner with plenty of stuff to choose from, so I was far away from starving... :)

For the sunset we went to the beach, from where you had spectacular view on the sunset - really a nice finishing off for this really great trip to Fraser. It's definitly one of the most interesting places on earth, there is so much to discover, I would have loved to stay there longer, but I had to move on.

After another night in the nice hostel in Hervey Bay I headed for Noosa - let's go surfing!

Stay tuned :)
