The last few days have been very memorable. There is just so much beauty out here in the american west. Our first stop: the great sand dunes national park. amidst a high plateau and on the foot of the mountains the sand dunes cover an area of 30mi². We went on a very tiring hike to the top of the highest dune and had a great overlook over the area and an almost sahara-like feeling. Unfortunately the nearby campinground was already full so we opted to drive to the san luis lake state park and had a chilled out evening beside our camp fire. The next day we were headed for the continental divide, the mountainpass over and through the rocky mountains. on the way up the ridges it started hailing but after only a short while it all cleared up and we enjoyed a wonderful view from one of the lookouts. That was probably the best drive we've had so far. Colorado offers amazing nature, even better than what you see in the movies. Also startling about the countryside is that it changes so fast. You drive 20 minutes and you come from forest-covered mountain ranges, rocky cliffs and small streams (the rio grande spring up in this area for example) in the middle of the desert with bzarre rock formations, vast open spaces and a seemingly infinite sky. The next day we continued to go west and visited mesa verde national park on the way. mesa verde is basically this big mountain top where given the right weather conditions you can see for almost 250km in every direction. Also the first indian settlers of the area built a number of houses under cliff overhangs but moved out of the region after a drought in the 13th century lasted for about 25 years. Today you can still see their cave dwellings. We didnt have enough time there (we never have) and so we kinda had to rush westwards again and headed towards the four corners, the place were four american states touch (utah, colorado, new mexico and arizona respectively) and took pictures of us standing in each state at once. We then said goodbye to three of them and continued our tour into arizona and with that into the desert. Today we saw the monument valley and learned a bit about the navajo tribe that inhabits north-eastern arizona. later on today we will reach the grand canyon and hopefully see more astonishing nature.

Was für unglaubliche letzte tage! hier im amerikanischen westen gibt es wirklich große wunder der natur. fangen wir an mit den great sand dunes. eine fläche von 30mi² wird von riesigen sanddünen wie in der sahara bedeckt. nach einer sehr anstrengenden klettertour standen wir dann nach einer weile auch auf der höchsten düne und hatten einen unfassbaren ausblick über die hochebene colorados. leider war der campingplatz nahe den dünen schon voll und so fuhren wir zum san luis lake state park und genossen den restlichen abend bei einem lagerfeuer. am nächsten tag erwartete uns die continental devide, also der pass über die rocky mountains. auf dem weg dahin fing es an mit hageln und gewittern allerdings dauerte das nicht lange an. dieser weg durch die berge war wirklich wunderschön. zerklüftete felswände, dicht bewaldete berghänge und gebirgsbäche (der rio grande entspringt hier) bilden hier eine atembaraubende landschaft die man sonst wohl nur in filmen sieht. Kurz nach dem pass hatten wir dann auch einen tollen ausblick und davon sind auch einige der fotos. noch eine besonderheit colorado ist es, dass sich die natur innerhalb von nur wenigen autominuten komplett umkrempeln kann und so kamen wir nach kurzer zeit von den grünen bergen in die staubige wüste mit bizarren felsformationen und ausgetrockneten flusstälern. auch gibt es hier das bekannte tumble weed, die strohballen die man aus jedem western kennt. mitten in solch einer landschaft liegt der mesa verde national park. ein riesiges plateau in der hochebene, welches einem einen atemberaubenden ausblick liefert (ihr seht schon: superlative über superlative xD). an guten tagen kann man vom far view point des parks in jede richtung bis zu 250km weit sehen...also quasi von leipzig aus berlin sehen. außerdem gibt es im park die zeugnisse der früheren besiedlung durch die indianer. diese haben nämlich ihre höhlenbehausungen in den fels unterhalb eines großen vorsprungs gebaut. allerdings verließen diese siedler die region im 13. jahrhundert wieder aufgrund einer 25 jährigen dürreperiode. leider hatten wir auch hier nicht viel zeit (haben wir nie) und mussten schnell weiter richtung westen zu den four corners, ein punkt in dem man gleichzeitig in 4 us staaten sein kann (utah, colorado, new mexico und arizona). dannach gings weiter zum monument valley wo wir in der nacht campierten und am nächsten tag uns den park anschauten. heute gehts also weiter zum grand canyon und damit wohl zu weiteren spektakulären naturwundern!
