Second week and Surf Camp

21.January 2013 - Seven Miles Beach

After a great week, the highlight happened at this weekend - Surf Camp. I can't give you the feeling of surfin', but I can try to explain it!Last Monday, there was a huge party at Sidebar - yes you're right, it was MONDAY :) I've never experienced a party that was that crazy during the week, really cool. Unfortunatly I missed my last train, so I had to wait for the bus to arrive and had about an hour till I was home...and Tuesday morning was less cool than the evening before, but thats life. So it is maybe clear, that I went early to bed Tuesday evening.

At Wednesday, we went to Manly Beach after school, again by ferry. It was cloudless sky, so I was able to make some breath-taking pictures from the Sydney Harbour. After a good time at the beach, we went back to the City center and had a tasty diner in a Mexican restaurant...okay, it was called a Mexican restaurant, but the only food that was really Mexican were some Nachos :)The school was not as challenging as the week before, maybe because I get a bit used to the language after a long time without English.

On Thursday evening, our teachers Chris and Jazz invited the whole Cambridge course to a diner in a pub near the school. The food was excellent and we all had a great time talking to each other and have some fun. Maybe it was luck, that I didn't went to bed too late, because the next day, Friday, was one of the most exhausting days in my life.

When I waked up in the morning, I felt that is going to be a warm day - it was even more than warm, it was like in a Sauna...the highest temperature that my mobile phone showed to me was about 47 degrees. I really like warm weather, but that was too much, I nearly sweated about 200 litres ;) So I was really happy, when wind came up in the evening and it started to rain.

In the evening, the Surf Camp started. The meeting point was near Central Station in the heart of the city. At 7.00 p.m. we started ou trip to the 130 km in south of Sydney locatet "Seven Miles Beach National Park". As soon we arrived in the Camp, we heard some Information about the whole event of Surf Camp. Everybody was very tired after the trip in the buses, so we went to bed directly after we received the information. Next morning, after a comfortable night in a 6-person-bungalow, we were all very excited for our first surfing lesson. Everybody got a wetsuit (called "wetties") from our instructores, took a surfboard and started to surf. In the first hour, it was a little bit frustraiting...everybody wanted to stand up, but nobody achieved that goal. After that, we learned how to do it properly, and what happended? Almost everybody was able to stand up for at least some seconds. It was a great feeling, to surf on your first wave (even it was a small one). I never expectet surfing that hard and exhausting than it actually was. After the day, everybody was dog-tired but happy. So we could find some energy to go to the only pub in the small village and have some beers. It was funny, to meet some new people. Almost half of the persons that joined Surf Camp, were from Switzerland, so it was even easier to communicate with them.

Next day was like the first day, everybody did a lot of progress in Surfing, so that we could surf on some of the big waves. It was big fun, but sometimes when you didn't catch the wave at the right moment, you got smashed in the water, which was sometimes painful :)

It was a great experience to surf for the first time. And it wasn't my last time, that is for sure!!

Cheers!
