Biggest sand island in the world

30.March 2010 - Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world, but it's still vegetated with lush rainforests. The west coast is a 100km white sandy beach, which is an official highway for all the 4WD vehicles. Driving is very comfortable and smooth there compared to the other inland sandy tracks which have deep holes. You might wonder, why they use a great sandy beach as a highway not as a swimming beach. Well, the whole west coast of Fraser Island is heavily populated by sharks. They are extremely plentiful there, because of the many fish. Nobody really minds, that there is no swimming in the ocean as the island has countless fresh water lakes inland with with sandy shores. The water is clean and nicely fresh because they are served by rainwater reservoirs from deep down in the earth.
Coming back to the 100km long beach. 4WD vehicles share the beach with little planes as well. With one of those planes we did a little scenic flight over the island and the water and we saw those sharks from the air!!
