Kangaroo Island

26.June 2013 - Kangaroo Island

Close to Adelaide is the 3rd largest Island of Australia, Kangaroo Island. Famous for its wildlife. SInce there were no animals like foxes, rabbits and dingoes introduced, this Island is home to a lot of animals that are endangered elsewhere in Australia.
Early in the morning we started our journey from tehe city of Adelaide to Cape Jervis, from where we took the ferry to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroo Island is about 150 km long so we had quite a bit to go before we got to the most famous parts.
First stop was Seal Bay, This is a colony of about 1000 sea lions, we definitly didn't see that many. They have a cycle of 3 days in the water for feeding at the continental reef 150 km away and relaxing on the beach for a couple days. Since it is quite cold at the moment they come up into the dunes to seek shelter from the cold wind from the South.

After lunch we headed in the direction of the Remarkable Rocks. These formations of granite balances on the edge of the ocean. This was my favourite thing on the island.

Afterwards we went to Admiral's Arch which is naturally carved into the coastline by the ocean. It is also home to the New Zealand sealions. It was pretty smelly because of that as well.

At the end of our tour we visited the Hanson Bay wildlife sanctuary, whcih used to be a farm and conservationists bought it and just took out the fences so the wildlife comes and goes as it wants. So we saw wallabies, kangaroos, echidna, geese and koalas. That was a nice end to a long day.
