Catlins

29.February 2012 - Catlins

Sea Lions at Waipapa Point, a fossil forest at Curio Bay (very interesting!) and the highlight: dolphins at the neighbouring Porpoise bay! Got the van over quickly, got in swimming trousers and getting in the water faster than we thought. Maybe the idea of dolphins made the coldness a bit more acceptable.
After a short waiting time some dolphins really showed up comming very close to where one stood in the water. Usually dashing past you from behind while you've been trying to spot some! Very cute and much smaller than the Dusky dolphins we saw at Lake McKerrow. I think these here are even the smallest in the world.
Amazing experience, the only unfortunate thing was that the visibillity under water was non existent, but hey, I won't complain :-) After more than half an hour being in the water (yes, i checked the time from the photos I took) we needed quite some time, a hot shower and lots of hot tea to warm up again. Nothing spectacular for the rest of the day, save for funny very fast changing weather.
Next day we had a visit at the lost Gypsies Gallery, which is a pretty cool and funny former bus with lots of things to wind and play with! Best thing for that grey and rainy weather! ..rain stoped, waterfall, nuggetpoint, nice.
