Branding

22.April 2010 - bar 69 ranch

This week we branded calfs, they are a couple weeks old. It' s not a really nice job for me to do that, to help to hurt them poor things. But it needs to be done.
The registered bulls and heifers get their brand on the right side on the backhand and we brand them with the calftable. That' s ways easier then to hold them the cowboy-way. But we still have to hold the comercial (?) , not registered, calfs. They get their 69 brand on the left side on the side. I don' t have a picture of that 69 brand.
Yesterday (23.04.) we branded the one year old heifers with their cownumbers on the left side. But we did't brand them with hot irons, we freeze-branded them. The irons are in Nitrogen (Stickstoff) and they are so cold that they burn them. Interesting, but not nice for the animals. I think that the freezebranding hurts not as much as the hot branding.
Last friday and saturday we sheared the other 1000 sheep. I helped this time on the trailer to throw fleeces and I sheared a half sheep. I think they kinda liked me, they never did that before. But I liked it and they said when they need help they will call me.
